Your CDL checklist

Get a DOT medical certificate
A physical exam from an FMCSA-certified medical examiner. Required before you can get a learner's permit.
Apply for your Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP)
Pass the knowledge test(s) for your class and any endorsements you need, at your state's licensing agency.
Complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT), if required
Federally required since Feb 2022 for first-time Class A/B applicants and anyone upgrading their license or adding a P, S, or H endorsement. Training must come from a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry.
Hold your permit for at least 14 days
Federal minimum waiting period between getting your CLP and taking the skills test.
Pass the skills test
Vehicle inspection, basic control, and road test, in the vehicle class you're applying for.
Get your CDL issued
Your state issues the CDL once your skills test and any required endorsement tests are passed and on file.
