A heavy and tractor-trailer truck driver earns a median annual wage of $58,640 in the United States, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey (OEWS, May 2025). Entry-level drivers earn around $40,140; experienced drivers earn around $79,380.

How to Become a CDL Driver
- 1Meet basic eligibility
Most states require candidates to be at least 18 for intrastate driving or 21 for interstate driving, hold a valid driver’s license, and pass a DOT physical exam.
- 2Get your CDL permit and complete training
Federal law requires real Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) through an FMCSA-registered provider before you can take the CDL skills test.
- 3Pass the real CDL General Knowledge exam
A real written test covering vehicle inspection, basic controls, and safe driving practices, administered by your state DMV.

A Day in the Life of a CDL Driver
CDL drivers spend real hours behind the wheel moving freight across real routes, but the job also includes pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, real logbook/ELD compliance, loading and securing cargo, and coordinating with dispatchers.
Real Hours of Service rules limit how long a driver can be on duty, and OTR (over-the-road) driving often means real multi-day trips away from home, while local and regional routes allow drivers home more regularly — the real tradeoff most new drivers weigh first.
