Checked 15 October 2026 against FINRA's SIE exam page, its enrollment page and its scheduling page.
Step 1: create a FINRA account
FINRA's steps for someone enrolling on their own start with creating an account. You do not need a sponsoring firm for the SIE. FINRA says association with a firm is not required.
Step 2: enroll and pay
Enroll for the SIE and pay by credit card or ACH, or redeem a voucher. FINRA lists the fee at $100 (see how much the SIE exam costs). The window for scheduling opens the day after you enroll.
Step 3: book your appointment with Prometric
You can book through Prometric's online scheduling page or by phone at (800) 578-6273. Have your name, your FINRA ID, a contact phone number and the exam name ready. Choose a test center or online testing. After enrollment FINRA sets a 120-day window in which the exam must be taken, so book early enough to fit it.
If you choose online testing
FINRA says you need a movable webcam or an undocked laptop camera, because check-in includes a full view of your workstation. You also install the ProProctor application and complete a system check. Do the check before exam day.
Changing your appointment
Reschedule or cancel in a timely way under the policy FINRA links from its scheduling page, since fees can apply. To switch from a test center to online, cancel the test center appointment first.
After the exam
FINRA says you get immediate notice of your pass or fail status. Passing scores and the retake rules are in SIE passing score and how it is scored.
